A good sized and messy swell greeted the competition at The Rip Curl Bells Beach Pro today. The WSL CT event two saw the completion of the men’s and women’s round one.

Chunky lumps of messy waves made the conditions difficult for the non-elimination first round of competition. With seven heats of round one finished yesterday the remaining five heats of the men’s played out today before the women hit the water.

Joel Parkinson (AUS) won the second heat of the day with a convincing victory, using his knowledge and experience to advance to round three.

“You’ve got to go with your gut feeling,” Joel Parkinson said. “On a normal day at Bells you can get in a flow but out here today there are waves breaking everywhere and anything could happen. I guess it’s a good result for me; I had a pretty bad one at home on the Gold Coast so I’m really looking for a solid result here”.

Heat ten was close and exciting with three Australians battling it for the third round placing. With Josh Kerr (AUS) showing a power and flow in his forehand attack to push Bede Durbidge (AUS) and Adam Melling (AUS) in to round two to fight it out.

Julian Wilson (AUS) and Kolohe Andino (USA) had the closest and hardest fought heat of the day with only 0.10 separating them, both clearly inform surfers they went wave for wave with Julian Wilson just getting the nod to advance.

The women’s competition saw some epic waves surfed with Silvana Lima (BRA) claiming the first perfect 10 of the event and the second 10 of the year both by her in her match up against Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) who surfed fantastically getting the highest heat score of the round an 18.37 to Silvana Lima’s 17.67 pushing her into round two.

World number one Carissa Moore (HAW) also had an outstanding heat scoring a 9.00 and an 8.97 to sail into round three. Carissa Moore has won Bells before and is clearly at the top of her game.

“Before the heat I was looking at it from the beach thinking it looked pretty tricky,” Carissa Moore said. “When I got out there I just tried to simplify things and luckily found a couple and had such a blast”.

Current world champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) also won her heat convincingly over her competitors.
