It’s that time of year again when we get to watch videos of the Big Wave Award nutters charge the craziest waves on the planet.

The announcement of the World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Awards nominations that have been drawn from hundreds of entries from all around the globe. The standard is incredibly high.

The big wave seasons from the last year saw some truly epic sessions notably Jaws, Maui and Nazare, Portugal. The extreme weather patterns that we have seen from the last year have generated some massive conditions and in turn some awesome nominations.

“It was another spectacular year of big wave surfing, all around the globe and might even be the most international season ever in the fifteen years since I started the Big Wave Awards,” said Bill Sharp, Event Director of the Big Wave Awards.

The WSL Big Wave Awards competition runs from 20th March 2014 until the 20th March 2015. A total of $120,000 of prize money is up for grabs with the cash being split between the surfer and videographer.  There are seven different awards with five nominations in each category but only nominees for four different categories being announced so far the others will be put out there in the coming weeks.

The nominations are as follows:

The Ride of the Year is basically the best surfed biggest wave, with commitment and an advanced level of skill. This award is the one all the big wave surfers want to win.

The Paddle Award is for the biggest wave caught and surfed by paddling only, no jetskis.
