Global Surf Sounds editor Kate Webster had a chat with big wave surfer Ross Clarke-Jones. Here’s what he had to say…
Where did your passion for the bigger waves come from? What made you transition to Big Waves?
From the age of 11 years old I was surfing a small beach break in Terrigal as my mother sat watching . About one kilometre out to sea a wave called The Haven was much bigger and I just looked in awe at it! By the time I was 12 I defied my mother’s instructions and paddled out to surf the Haven! I always remember wanting a bigger wave! Never satisfied.
What goes through your mind when you paddle into these monster waves?
When I size the beast up and commit to go , I’m going for sure no matter what! Hesitating is not an option! I either commit or let it go!
Do you have a favourite wave?
Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay
Where has been somewhere you have travelled where there was no surf, but you enjoyed it? And Why?
Nurburgring, Germany. I raced a Porsche GT2 on that racetrack for 10 days, two times a year! It’s the best feeling in the world besides racing down a massive wave.
What type of training do you do to prepare for big wave surfing?
Besides normal cardio workout on Mountain Bikes and rowing machines I do KIESER TRAINING for strength in my legs, neck, back, ankles and arms! Most effective for strength I’ve found! Results are quick and lasting.
Is there anywhere you have not conquered yet that is on the list?
A wave in Chile South America. I’m on call this year with a local Chilean Big Wave Surfer that knows his stuff.
When you are not surfing, how do you chill?
I don’t chill!! I go as hard as I can all the time until my battery runs out! Then I watch TV and fall asleep immediately. Then get up and go go go!!! Again.
You seem fearless. Is there anything that scares you?
Getting trapped in a another relationship! I’ve been with a girl or married since I was 13 years old! Just one relationship after another! I’m finally single now!
Who has most inspired / influenced you?
My Father, Tom Carroll and Gary KONG Elkerton, & James Bond ?
