The Australian WSL QS series has started with the completion of the first event at Burleigh Heads, the Scoot Burleigh Pro.
The 1000 rated WSL QS event men’s winner was former CT surfer Mitch Crews, AUS, while the women’s won by Dimity Stoyles, AUS.
Played out in small clean waves the popular venue of Burleigh Heads delivered long pealing right handers providing an ideal canvas for the surfers to showcase their talents.
The men’s all Australian final was contested in messier conditions as the afternoon onshore had picked up by the time they entered the water. The surfers put on a superb performance wowing the crowd with a display of progressive surfing.
Mitch won in the last few minutes making the most of the waves that came his way. After the final Mitch had this to say. “I had a great year on the CT last year and I leant a lot but I didn’t requalify. So to start 2015 with a win is perfect — it’s been a while since I won something and it’s feeling pretty good.”
The women’s final was close fought with Stoyle getting the score to overtake Bronte Macaulay in the closing stages of the final. Stoyle is preparing for her second year on the CT and a win here sets her in good stead.
“Being the number one seed is always stressful — everyone expects you to do well,” Stoyle said. “I didn’t want to put that pressure on myself so I just focused on enjoying surfing Burleigh with just three other girls.”
