It always helps to walk up to the check in counter and see a smiling staff member on the other side.  Fiji Airways check in at Brisbane airport was a breeze and refreshing to not have to wait so long in the queue as the staff were turning over check ins so efficiently.

At the airport

Flying business class allowed an express check through customs which definitely helped the normally lengthy process.  Brisbane airport has a number of duty free shops, food outlets and places to sit and relax before your flight.  Flying Fiji Airways business class gave me access to the Qantas Club Business Lounge as they are interlined partners.

It is a joy when you board a flight of the national carrier and you already feel like you are at your destination.  This was the case with Fiji Airways.  The children in front of me were greeted by a “bula” from the air host, in which they all replied “bula” in unison.  The planes have been fitted with the new Fiji Airways logo and are fresh looking with their beige seating.  The bathrooms had that smell of Fijian paradise even, with coconut face mist a sure favourite.  The seats reclined to a comfortable lay back position and for sure a short flight there was no need for the flat bed to sleep.  Inflight entertainment included a choice of audio channels, TV shows and a wide range of movies.

The staff were so relaxed and friendly, and I don’t think I ever saw them not smiling.  Despite this they were very professional and happy to assist where they could, including helping me work the seat controls.  It showed that they enjoyed their jobs.  My favourite part was their uniforms which included the frangipani flower behind the ear.

Food & drinks

Normally you would expect a small meal that just fills the gap between take-off and landing, however the meal was monstrous.  Including a choice of fish, lamb, chicken or vegetarian, the meals has a twist of Fijian to them which was nice to get me in the mood for my destination.  Drinks on offer included some local beers, spirits and wines with a wide range of soft drinks.

Global Surf Sounds recommends

If you are on a flight arriving during the day, try book a window seat.  The view flying into Fiji is always spectacular with the surrounding azure waters, reef and green island paradise.
