John John Florence has claimed his fourth Volcom Pipe Pro win in five years.

One of the most popular events on the QS series the contest was carried out in pumping surf.

John John took the win over Mason Ho, Kelly Slater and Sebastian Zeitz. Kelly and John John were the stand out surfers of the event continually swapping top scores between them.

The final day of the contest started in perfect surf but as the day progressed a side wind while holding open the Backdoor tube added a slight bump to the face which made for difficult conditions.

Both of John John’s winning waves were within the first ten minutes, laying down scores of 9.2 and 8.43 for the highest heat score of the entire event 17.63 out of 20, leaving the others to play catch up and putting Kelly Slater in the unusual position of needing a combination score. John john’s local knowledge undoubtably played a massive part together with his natural talent he was unstoppable in the final.

“Going into this year it’s going to be a fun one. I come in with a lot of confidence out of last year, knowing I can make the heats and do really good. I’m just going to go into this year thinking the same kind of thing and hopefully it comes down to the end of the year out here at Pipe. It would be awesome. That’s my dream come true – to win a World Title out here at Pipe. I couldn’t ask for anything more.” Said Florence.

The only trouble with this event is that it only comes once a year and now we are going to have to wait till December till we see the tour return to the North Shore.
