Competition resumed today at the Margret River Pro with nine of the heats at The Box in heavy crazy waves before the tide pushed too low and the remaining three were completed at the main peak.
The conditions were big, clean and very hollow. The Box is regarded as one of the most dangerous waves in the world. The waves jack up quickly and barrels over a very shallow very sharp reef.
The first heat of the day saw what could be the biggest upset of the year so far with current world champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) being eliminated by local wildcard Jay Davies (AUS).
Jay Davies started strong with a 6.67 getting blown out of a good sized tube. Then Gabriel Medina answered back with an equal score that just nudged him into the lead, the local wildcard then found massive 8.50 to which Medina had no reply. Jay Davies will face three time world champion Mick Fanning (AUS) in the next round.
“I’m feeling super stoked,” Davies said. “We had shark cruise through the lineup which was a little sketchy, but it was only a baby one eating some fish”
The highest heat total of the day went to Owen Wright (AUS) who posted an 18.50 and in the process scored a perfect 10 on the second of the season so far. Wright took off on a monster, one of the biggest waves of the day and surfed it flawlessly. Wright’s competitor Dusty Payne (HAW) fought bravely but couldn’t find the scores to overcome an in form Wright.
“I’ve never surfed out here before and this was my first time in the lineup,” said Wright. “The set came so I just went. After my ten I remember going, ‘give me more’. I just love it and I love waves like this. When that wave came through I managed to get in the right spot and it let me in perfectly, the wave did the rest from there.”
Heat 4 was the match up of current ratings leader Filipe Toledo (BRA) and tour rookie Ricardo Christie (NZ). They went blow for blow, wave for wave, with what was the closest heat of the round. Both surfers had similar scores for their first waves. Christie had a backup score in place with Toledo chasing the score but with time running out was forced to take a smaller inside wave and just fell short of what was needed to take the win. Ricardo Christie will face Adriano De Souza (BRA) in the round 3.
“I feel like I’ve just won the competition,” said Christie. “It’s been a tough start to the year for me and it’s pretty sick to have an event out here in waves like this. It’s great to beat Filipe (Toledo) there’s been a lot going his way this year and it’s been going the opposite for me.”
Another of the days upsets came in heat 8 with Kolohe Andino (USA) being defeated at the hands of Glenn Hall (IRE). The lowest scoring heat of the day with both surfers struggling to find a makeable barrel. Hall managed to thread his way through a shallow backhand barrel getting the score needed to advance to the next round. Glenn Hall will face Kelly Slate (USA) in round 3.
Local tour veteran Taj Burrow (AUS) also performed well in his match up against Bret Simpson (USA) Burrow knows this wave better than most surfers got a couple of good barrels to be able to comfortably advance to round 3.
