Their one of a kind style and the fact that surf-music can indeed be “Made in Germany” has already been proven with the release of FYE & FENNEK’s first single, “Focus”.
FYE & FENNEK themselves have their roots in the surfer scene, already hyped by surf insiders for their unique sound combining synth pop and electronica, coupled with folk and indietronic, all cradled in familiar singer-songwriter melodies.
Their sound evokes images and emotions: Mild summer evenings in exotic places, the warm sun, blue water and the comforting sound of the ocean; the feeling of salt water on your skin or fine grains of sand sticking to your body- all things that echo the feeling and taste of complete freedom.
FYE, alias Faye – a female singer-songwriter, passionate surfer and artist, who is also part of the female artist and surfer collective Velwet – and FENNEK, alias Jan – a young producer, who has been involved in several solo and band projects for about 12 years – mesmerize with imaginative lyrics and deep hitting beats.
The duo, who met by coincidence on a boozy night, reminds listeners of bands like The Knife, Air or Angus & Julia Stone. Transmitting a certain lifestyle and feeling they guide listeners to inch further into a new, deep, mystic sphere that’s exciting but not alien. And this exactly is what the band accomplishes with their second single, “Shelter.” FYE & FENNEK not only deliver positive, warm and emotional vibes, but they carry a piece of the summer in their pockets.
The song was born on FYE’s road trip through California, which influenced the songs imaginative lyrics. It’s reflected in phrases like, “through the wild woods and the windy dust,” and clearly represented in the music video itself.
In a broader sense, “Shelter” narrates a love story. The song outlines in bright imagery how falling in and out of love resembles a dance between hope and disappointment and describes loving someone so much, you wouldn’t imagine changing a thing about the experience and completely resign yourself to the dance. The melody and instruments carefully emphasis and support this story.
The melancholic, bearing synths build a dramaturgy from the beginning, each instrument tying and melting into the other. The pressure of the beats breaks the airy and fragile arrangement of the guitar and sweet singing voice- leading the listener into a place of deep, honest and excessive freedom. All of this is supported by an unusual combination of half time hip hop beats with reggae and subtle elements of jazz.
The sound creates a carefree airiness that aligns with the story line, as if it were rain being parted by a rainbow on a summer day.
